Autostart on Samsung signage

On a Samsung Smart Signage panel you do not have to set up a separate autostart app or toggle as you do on Android. The built-in URL Launcher is the autostart: as soon as you set it as the boot source, the panel fetches gibeon.io and starts it by itself at every boot. Set it up once, and after every power interruption or restart the screen returns to your content by itself.

The URL Launcher is the autostart

Are you setting up the panel for the first time? Then follow Install Samsung Tizen (URL Launcher). In short:

  1. Set the boot source to the URL Launcher: System → Play via → URL Launcher (on some models this is called App Management → Install Custom App).
  2. Enter https://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen as the address.
  3. Save and restart the panel.

From that moment you do not have to do anything. As long as the URL Launcher remains the boot source, gibeon.io starts by itself at every boot. No login on the screen, no manual start, and no toggle that can switch off by accident.

Make sure the screen does not switch off by itself

Autostart only makes sense if the panel actually stays on. A Samsung panel switches itself off by default when there is no signal or after a period of inactivity. Turn that off:

  1. Go to System → Eco Solution.
  2. Turn Auto Power Off and No Signal Power Off off.
  3. Also turn off the sleep timer.

Do you want the screen to switch on and off at fixed hours (for example during shop hours)? Then use the On/Off timer under System → Time, see turn a screen off on a schedule. The panel then starts by itself at the set hour, and back into gibeon.io.

Set the clock correctly, otherwise the boot does not load

At every boot the panel fetches gibeon.io over a secure https connection. If the clock is wrong, that connection breaks and the screen stays black or hangs on the loading screen. So set the time correctly before you leave the screen:

  1. Go to System → Time.
  2. Turn on automatic time (NTP) if that option is there, otherwise set the time manually.
  3. Choose the right time zone (Belgium: Brussels, GMT+1) and turn on daylight saving time (DST).

The right clock also makes sure scheduled and time-based content plays at the right moment.

Restart or update: what does the screen remember?

  • A regular restart or power interruption: the panel starts again by itself via the URL Launcher, stays paired and shows your content right away, even offline from its cache. You do not have to activate anything again.
  • An update of the player: for a new version the panel fetches it by itself via the URL Launcher and installs it in the background. Your content keeps playing and your pairing is kept, normally you do not have to do anything again.

The player does not start by itself

After a restart the screen stays black or shows the Samsung menu

Then the boot source is no longer set to the URL Launcher. An installation from USB or another source may have overwritten it. Go to System → Play via, choose URL Launcher again, check the address https://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen and restart the panel.

The screen switches off by itself after a while

Turn off the automatic shutdown under System → Eco Solution (Auto Power Off and No Signal Power Off) and turn off the sleep timer. If you want the screen to work at fixed hours, use the On/Off timer under System → Time.

The panel does not load at boot (black or hangs)

Check the internet connection and the date/time (set the clock to automatic / NTP). If https does not work on an older Tizen 4.0 panel, try http://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen. Set the boot source to URL Launcher and restart.

Do I have to set anything per screen for autostart?

No. Every panel simply points to the same URL Launcher address and then starts by itself. Whether you have one or four hundred, the steps are identical and there is no per-device setting.
