Autostart on Google TV and Android stick
gibeon.io player starts by itself at every boot. Some Android devices need one extra setting. Here you find what to do per brand.
Dedicated signage screen or shared TV?
During the first setup the wizard asks which mode you choose:
- The mode for a screen used only for signage: gibeon.io player starts automatically at every boot and brings itself back to the foreground if something else comes over it. This is the default choice for screens that serve only as signage.
- The mode for a shared TV: gibeon.io player does not start automatically. You open the app yourself when you want. gibeon.io stays completely out of the way outside those moments. Use this when the same TV is also used for other purposes (meeting room, reception desk).
You can change the choice later via the admin menu in the app.
What does autostart do?
At every boot of the TV or stick, gibeon.io player tries to bring itself to the foreground. That works without further settings on most devices. Two scenarios do need action:
- Sony Bravia Google TV has a built-in “Auto-start app” toggle that is off by default. Turn it ON for gibeon.io player.
- Google TV Streamer and Chromecast first show the home launcher. From there you press the gibeon.io tile to start playing. Pin gibeon.io all the way to the left for one-click access.
On Xiaomi TV Stick 4K and other stock Android TV devices, gibeon.io player tries to start by itself. Usually that works. Not working? Check the tip at the bottom.
Sony Bravia
- Open Settings on your Bravia.
- Go to Apps.
- Choose Auto-start.
- Tick gibeon.io player.
From the next boot, gibeon.io player starts by itself without you having to press anything.
Xiaomi TV Stick
The Xiaomi TV Stick 4K has no separate auto-start menu. gibeon.io player tries to start itself at every boot through Android’s standard BOOT_COMPLETED mechanism. On most Xiaomi firmwares that works without further action.
Not working?
- Open gibeon.io player manually once after a boot to verify that everything is set up correctly.
Google TV Streamer and Chromecast
Google blocks apps from setting themselves as the HOME launcher on Google TV. At every boot Google TV therefore first shows its own launcher. This is how you keep gibeon.io one click away:
- Open gibeon.io player once after the boot.
- Press the home button. gibeon.io is now in the “Recent apps” row.
- Long-press the gibeon.io tile and choose Move left until gibeon.io is all the way at the front.
From then on gibeon.io is one press of the remote away.
Other Android TV devices
For TCL, Hisense, Philips or other stock Android TV brands, follow the Sony block above as a visual reference. Some brands have the auto-start toggle in a different place. Search Settings for “Auto-start”, “Auto-launch” or “Apps that start on boot”.
Cannot find a toggle? Then pin gibeon.io all the way to the left on the home screen, as with Google TV Streamer and Chromecast above.
Why does the wizard ask for “Display over other apps”?
During the first setup the wizard asks for the Display over other apps permission (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW). We do not use it to show anything visual on top of other apps. We only use it to bring gibeon.io player back to the front when an Android system popup (firmware update, storage warning) temporarily takes the focus.
Does the toggle not work on your device? Skip it. gibeon.io otherwise works fine, it just cannot resolve an interruption automatically in that case.
Thanks for your feedback.
