Playlists vs schedules vs sequences
Three concepts seem to do the same thing (put content on a screen), but each has its own job. Here is the quick comparison.
In one table
| What you want | Use |
|---|---|
| One list of content that loops | Playlist |
| Different content at different times or days | Schedule |
| A long rotation of several playlists, no time slot | Sequence |
One sentence per concept
- A playlist is a row of content items that plays and restarts.
- A schedule determines which playlist plays in which time slot.
- A sequence plays several playlists one after another, endlessly.
When you combine them
Often. A typical signage setup:
- You create playlists for each theme (
Lunch,Evening,Christmas promo). - You add those playlists to a sequence for long rotations without a time slot.
- For specific parts of the day or specific days, you use a schedule that lets a specific playlist or sequence take precedence over the normal schedule.
Priority when they overlap
A schedule takes priority over a sequence or a single playlist that is linked directly to the screen. If the schedule plans nothing for the current time slot, the player uses its fallback setting (often: the linked playlist or sequence).
