Restart the player

A restart solves about 80% of freezes, stuck content or slow updates. There are two ways to do it.

From the CMS, remotely

  1. Open Screens in the CMS.
  2. Click the screen you want to restart.
  3. Open the ⋯ menu and choose Reboot.

The player reboots within 30 seconds. During the reboot the screen briefly shows a waiting image, then the linked content comes back.

Remote only works for players that are online. An offline player does not respond to a remote command.

Physically, on site

For an offline player or if the remote command does not arrive:

  1. Pull the power plug of the player.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.

The player boots again and restores its connection. The gibeon.io player has no separate on/off button: the plug is the switch.

What a restart solves

  • A player that looks online but no longer fetches new content
  • A frozen or black screen
  • A player with an expired activation code cache
  • Temporary wifi hiccups

What a restart does not solve

  • A fundamental network problem (firewall, captive portal, no wifi)
  • Wrongly linked content (no playlist or a wrong schedule)
  • A corrupt content file. Upload the file again

Scheduled restarts

For production environments we recommend a daily restart, for example at 03:00 at night. That keeps the memory fresh and prevents 99% of the typical long-running issues. For the gibeon.io player we arrange that on our side. No action is needed on your side.

For BYOD Android devices you can install a keep-awake-and-reboot app or set the TV to auto-reboot.

If a restart does not help

The player does not reboot with the CMS button

You get no feedback that the reboot was sent? The player is offline. See player offline. If the player is online and the button does nothing, email [email protected].

The player does not come back after a physical restart

Wait 2 minutes. The first boot after a long time off can take longer because the player fetches updates. Not back within 5 minutes? Check internet, then power, then email support with the screen ID.

The player keeps rebooting in a loop

Very rare, usually caused by a corrupt update package. Email [email protected]. We roll out a recovery update to the device.
