Playlists
A playlist is an ordered list of content items that plays one after another and then starts over. It is the most common way to get content on a screen.
Creating a playlist
- In the CMS, go to Content › Playlists and click New playlist.
- The playlist opens in the editor with the name
New Playlist. If that name already exists, the playlist gets a number:New Playlist 2. - Click the name to change it. Examples:
Shop window evening,Reception welcome,Lunch offers. Every playlist name is unique in your account. If the name is already in use, you see a message under the field.
Adding content
In the editor you choose a block type for each item:
- Image: an image from Media. More.
- Video: a video that is transcoded automatically for smooth streaming. More.
- YouTube: a YouTube video via URL. More.
- Slideshow: several images in one block. More.
- Weather: current temperature and forecast for a chosen location. More.
- QR code: a code for your guest wifi or a link. More.
- Web page: a live web page via an https link. More.
A block with data, a template filled with data from an integration (for example a property from Whise), comes from a data app under Add › My apps or New app. An existing Studio block keeps its own editor. More.
You create Weather, YouTube, QR code and Web page under New app in Add. You can also create them first on the Apps page and then choose them in Add under My apps. The block keeps its own duration.
For each item you set a Duration (in seconds). While the playlist is active, the player goes through the items in order and restarts at the end.
Linking a playlist to a screen
Three ways:
- When you activate a new screen: choose the playlist under What appears on the screen on the Connect Screen page. From the second screen on, that question is called What does this screen show?. Then choose A copy of (screen) for a new playlist
<name of the playlist> (copy)with the same blocks. Or choose More choices for the full list. See Activate your first screen. - From the screen detail page: click Select content and select a playlist.
- From the playlist: open the playlist and click Push to screen.
Under the name of the playlist in the editor you see which screens it plays on. Click a screen name to open that screen. If it plays on no screen, the editor says so.
One playlist can run on several screens at the same time. If you change the playlist, all linked screens get the update automatically.
When not to choose a playlist
- Different content at different times: use a planning that alternates several playlists.
- A long content rotation: combine playlists in a sequence.
- One property larger, another smaller on the same screen: use zones.
What if it does not work
An item does not play
Open the playlist, click the item and look at the preview. If that is empty too, the source is missing. Upload the file again or correct the external URL. For templates: check that the linked data item still exists in the integration.
The duration is wrong for a video
For videos, gibeon.io follows the actual video length by default. If you want to cut it shorter, set the duration below the video length; longer than the video length repeats the video until the duration is up.
How long does a Studio block last?
The duration you set applies per item from your data source. If your block shows 22 properties at 10 seconds per item, the block lasts 220 seconds. If you want a shorter playlist, lower the duration per item or limit the number through Max Items in the block settings.
Changes do not appear on the screen
First check under the name of the playlist in the editor whether it plays on that screen; a change in another playlist does not reach the screen. Did you explicitly click Publish N screens in the header? Changes in the CMS only go live after a publish action. Online screens pick up a new publication within a minute. If it takes longer, check whether the player is still online.
