CSV or JSON link

With a CSV or JSON link you put the rows of a table on your screen, for example a timetable, a price list or an occupancy overview. You paste the link, pick up to four columns and gibeon.io does the rest. A Google Sheet works too.

  • gibeon.io fetches the link again every 15 minutes.
  • gibeon.io keeps at most 100 rows, in the order of the file. A row in which all chosen columns are empty is dropped.
  • A value shows as text, as it appears in the file, with at most 200 characters per cell.
  • A CSV file may use a comma, a semicolon or a tab as separator, and may be UTF-8, the older Excel encoding or Unicode text from Excel.
  • A JSON file is a list of objects, or a list under a single key.
  • If the link stops working for a while, the last rows stay on the screen.

Requirements

  • A link to a CSV file, a JSON list or a Google Sheet.
  • The link must be reachable without a login and without an API key.
  1. Sign in to app.gibeon.io.
  2. Go to Design › Data and click New source.
  3. Click the CSV or JSON link tile. A window opens.
  4. Paste the link into Link and click Check. gibeon.io shows the column names and the first rows.
  5. Under Columns on the screen (up to four), choose the columns you want to show. Choose them in the order in which they appear on the screen.
  6. Click Add.

gibeon.io creates the source and fetches the rows right away. You see the rows on the source page under Design › Data.

The tile appears only under Design › Data, not under Apps. You then put the source on a screen through the existing flow for data sources.

Change the columns later

Open the source page under Design › Data. In the Columns section, click Change columns, choose other columns or a different order and click Save columns. gibeon.io then fetches the link again.

Layouts

There are two layouts for the rows:

  • A landscape table: 8 rows per page
  • A portrait table: 12 rows per page

Both use the column names as the header. When there are more rows than fit on one page, the screen pages through the rows.

Use a Google Sheet

There are two ways. In both cases, paste the address into Link.

Share with anyone with the link

  1. In the Google Sheet, click Share.
  2. Under General access, choose Anyone with the link.
  3. Paste the regular link of the Sheet.

Publish to the web

  1. In the Google Sheet, choose File › Share › Publish to web.
  2. Choose CSV as the format.
  3. Paste the link that Google shows.

Sample files

Want to try it first? Paste one of these links into Link:

  • https://www.gibeon.io/media/docs/data-integraties/lesrooster.json

Both hold the same five lessons with the columns Tijd, Les, Zaal and Docent (time, lesson, room and teacher).

Limits

  • An organisation can have at most 10 CSV or JSON links. When you add the eleventh, gibeon.io says: “Your organisation already has 10 CSV or JSON links.”
  • You choose at most four columns.
  • gibeon.io shows at most 100 rows.
  • The link must be reachable without a login.
  • The link starts with https://.

Troubleshooting

When the link does not work, the window says what went wrong. After you add the link, the same message appears on the source page, while the screen keeps showing the last rows.

No rows appear

Open the link in a browser without being signed in. If it shows the file, gibeon.io can read it too. If it shows a login page, the link does not work.

The rows are not up to date

gibeon.io fetches the link every 15 minutes. If a message appears on the source page, the last rows stay on the screen until the link works again.
