News feed

With a news feed you put the headlines of a news site, a blog or your own announcements on your screen. You paste the address of the feed, gibeon.io does the rest. RSS 2.0 and Atom both work.

What the news feed does

  • gibeon.io fetches the feed every 15 minutes by default. You change that on the source page under Updating › How often to fetch.
  • gibeon.io keeps the 20 newest articles, with title, date, a short summary and the photo if the feed has one.
  • If the feed is unreachable for a while, the last articles stay on the screen.
  • The photos are stored with gibeon.io, so they also show on the player without internet.

Add a news feed

  1. Sign in to app.gibeon.io.
  2. Go to Content › Apps, click Add app at the top right and open All apps.
  3. Click Add at News. A window opens.
  4. Enter the address in Feed address. It usually ends in /feed or /rss. Leave Name empty to use the title of the feed.
  5. Click Save.

gibeon.io fetches the feed right away. While that runs, the button reads Fetching feed…. If the feed does not work, the window says what went wrong and nothing is saved.

If it works, the app appears under My apps. Open a playlist, click Add and choose the app under My apps. See Apps.

The same News tile also appears under Design › Data at New source. It opens the same window. The source itself is then on the source page under Design › Data.

The status of the feed

On the source page, under Design › Data, the Feed card shows the address and the status. After a successful sync it says, for example, “OK, 20 articles”. When something goes wrong, it says in plain words what happened, together with the time of the last good sync.

Layouts

There are two layouts for news:

  • A landscape news layout shows 4 headlines per page.
  • A portrait news layout shows 5.

You see them in the layout choice only when the source is a news feed. A news app that you create from All apps gets both layouts, landscape and portrait.

Limits

  • An organisation can have at most 10 news feeds.
  • A news feed does not take up a connection slot. So it does not count toward the number of connections in your plan.
  • Internal and local addresses, such as localhost or an address on a local network, are refused. The feed must be reachable from the internet.
  • You cannot change the address of a feed. Delete the source and add it again with the new address.

Troubleshooting

No articles appear

Open the Feed card on the source page and read the status. Check whether the address shows a feed in a browser. A regular web page is not a feed.

The address is refused

The address points to an internal or local network, or it is not a valid web address. Use the public address of the feed.

The articles are not up to date

gibeon.io fetches the feed every 15 minutes by default. If there is an error in the status, the last good articles stay on the screen until the feed works again.
