Install Samsung Tizen (URL Launcher)

Do you have a Samsung Smart Signage panel? Then gibeon.io runs directly on the screen itself, without a box or stick. You point the built-in URL Launcher at gibeon.io once, and the panel fetches the player and starts it at every boot.

What plays on your Samsung screen

gibeon.io runs as a real app on the panel itself, no separate box and no browser tab that has to stay open. Everything you create in gibeon.io also plays on your Samsung screen:

  • Photos and images
  • Templates with live data, for example real estate from Whise, Omnicasa or Zabun, or your own feed, which change automatically
  • Video with hardware acceleration on the panel
  • Playlists and sequences that you put together in the CMS
  • Offline: after the first sync the panel caches your content and keeps playing if the network drops

Good to know about the Samsung hardware: a panel has one video decoder, so one video plays at a time (not two videos side by side in separate zones). For smooth playback use H.264 up to 1080p. Photos, templates and data do not have this limitation.

What you need

  • A Samsung Smart Signage panel with SSSP6 / Tizen 4.0 or newer
  • An internet connection on the panel
  • Your activation code from the CMS (Screens → Connect screen)

Step 1: Clock, time zone and screen settings

Do this first, before you set up the URL Launcher. The panel fetches gibeon.io over a secure https connection, and a wrong clock breaks that connection (the screen then does not load). The right time also makes sure scheduled and time-based content plays at the right moment.

  1. Open the menu and go to System → Time.
  2. Set the clock and date correctly. If there is an option for automatic time (NTP), turn it on; otherwise set the time manually.
  3. Choose the right time zone (for Belgium: Brussels, GMT+1) and turn on daylight saving time (DST).
  4. Make sure the screen stays on: go to System → Eco Solution and turn off the automatic shutdown (“Auto Power Off” and “No Signal Power Off”), together with the sleep timer. A signage screen should not go into standby by itself.
  5. Do you want the screen to switch on and off at fixed hours (for example during shop hours)? Then set the On/Off timer under System → Time.

Step 2: Set up the URL Launcher

  1. On the panel, open the menu (Home / Menu on the remote).

  2. Go to System → Play via and choose URL Launcher. On some models this is called App Management → Install Custom App.

  3. Open the URL Launcher settings and enter this as the address:

    https://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen

If loading does not work with https, try http://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen (older Tizen 4.0 panels). If the panel does not load the app at all, add a slash at the end: https://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen/. Tizen sometimes asks for that without the panel saying so.

  4. Save and restart the panel. It downloads gibeon.io and starts it automatically at every boot.

Step 3: Activate the screen

After the restart the panel shows a 4-character activation code. Enter it at app.gibeon.io (Screens → Connect screen) and connect the screen. Your content appears as soon as the screen is connected. There is no login on the panel itself: you connect the screen from the CMS, not by logging in on the screen.

Nothing to register per screen

With Samsung you do not have to request or register anything: no DUID, no developer certificate, no MagicINFO server and no contract with Samsung. Every panel simply points to the same URL. Whether you have one screen or four hundred, the steps are identical and there is no installation per device.

Updates and autostart

  • Autostart is automatic: as long as the URL Launcher is the boot source, gibeon.io starts at every boot. More about autostart, the power settings and restart behaviour: autostart on Samsung signage.
  • Updates come by themselves: for a new version the panel fetches it via the URL Launcher and installs it in the background. Your content keeps playing and your pairing is kept.

What if it does not work

Which Samsung screens are supported?

Samsung Smart Signage panels with SSSP6 / Tizen 4.0 or newer (for example the OM and QB series). A regular consumer Smart TV has no URL Launcher, use the browser or an Android player on the HDMI input there.

The panel does not load the URL

Check the internet connection and the date/time of the panel (set the clock to automatic). If https does not work, try http://cdn.gibeon.io/player/tizen. Make sure the boot source is set to URL Launcher and restart the panel.

The screen switches off or goes into standby by itself

Turn off the automatic shutdown under System → Eco Solution (“Auto Power Off” and “No Signal Power Off”) and turn off the sleep timer. If you want the screen to switch on and off at fixed hours, use the On/Off timer under System → Time.

The time or scheduled content is wrong

Set the clock, time zone and daylight saving time (DST) correctly under System → Time (turn on automatic time / NTP if that option is there). A wrong clock also breaks the secure connection the panel uses to fetch gibeon.io.

Does it also work offline?

Yes. After the first sync the panel caches your images, templates and video, and keeps playing if the network drops for a while. The first activation does need internet.

Does video play?

Yes, video plays with hardware acceleration on the panel itself. For smooth operation use H.264 up to 1080p.

Can I show two videos at the same time?

No. A Samsung panel has one video decoder, so one video plays at a time. You can combine photos, templates and data in zones. This is a limitation of the Samsung hardware, not of gibeon.io.

Do I have to register anything per screen (DUID, certificate, MagicINFO)?

No. No DUID, no developer certificate, no MagicINFO server and no contract with Samsung. You simply point every panel to the same URL Launcher address, whether there is one or four hundred.
